Efficiency and safety with the Kemex dosing system
Metsä Tissue is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of tissue paper products and a global frontrunner in greaseproof paper production. The company is committed to safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly solutions across all its production facilities. The implementation of the Kemex dosing system at the Mänttä mill has improved process control and chemical safety, while also reducing waste and increasing efficiency.
Modern Chemical Management Enhances Performance
The decision to implement the Kemex dosing system was driven by three key objectives: improving chemical safety, increasing efficiency, and enhancing process control. Metsä Tissue selected Kontram as the supplier, a company with a solid reputation as a reliable partner in the paper and board industry.
“Kontram’s expertise and reliability, combined with the precision and operational reliability of the Kemex system, were central to our decision. Kemex was already in use at several other Metsä Group production sites, but this was the first time it was deployed this extensively for dosing retention chemicals,” says Kim Viitala, Production Manager at Metsä Tissue’s Mänttä mill.
Smooth Implementation Thanks to Close Collaboration
The implementation of the Kemex dosing system was completed as planned, thanks to thorough preparation and close cooperation. The system was tailored to Metsä Tissue’s specific needs, taking into account all the chemicals used in the production process and the required safety standards. Prior to commissioning, comprehensive site surveys and precise measurements were conducted to ensure seamless integration with the mill’s existing infrastructure.
“Collaboration with Kontram was excellent throughout the entire project. They understood our needs and delivered exactly what we wanted. This project is a great example of how things should be done,” says Kim Viitala, Production Manager at Metsä Tissue’s Mänttä mill.

Significant Benefits Become Quickly Evident
The Kemex dosing system has brought improvements to Metsä Tissue’s process performance. Chemicals are managed safely in containment basins and locked cabinets, and any leaks are detected automatically, minimizing risks to employees and the environment. The dosing accuracy is at the milliliter level, which enhances production quality and reduces unnecessary chemical consumption.
“Our chemical safety has improved. We now have leak alarms, a centralized chemical dosing area, and optimized container changes. The measurement data is reliable, allowing us to optimize consumption and closely monitor the process,” says Kim Viitala.
Positive Experiences Encourage Wider Use
The successful implementation of the Kemex dosing system at the Mänttä mill has demonstrated the system’s effectiveness.
“I believe Kemex is also well suited for our other mills. Its precision and patented technology make it unique, and Kontram’s flexibility, expertise, and ability to provide tailored solutions make them a reliable partner,” summarizes Kim Viitala, Production Manager at Metsä Tissue’s Mänttä mill.
